Democrats are expected to retain control of the New Mexico Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday, but the question is – by what margin?
Voters will decide on just 15 competitive races. More than half of New Mexico’s races for the Roundhouse were decided in the June primary, with 65 total lawmakers not facing an opponent in the general election.
New Mexico’s upper chamber will see some new faces after a slew of retirements this past year and the first elections since the 2021 redrawing of district boundaries. Democrats hold a 27-to-15 seat majority over Republicans.
In the House, 38 candidates face no challenger in the General Election. Democrats hold a 45-to-25 majority over Republicans seats in that chamber.
All results released from the New Mexico Secretary of State’s office on Tuesday will be preliminary and will still require certification over the coming weeks to become official.
Polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday and close at 7 p.m. Early election returns from the more than 660,000 votes will be available shortly after polls close. Close elections or a large amount of absentee ballots may require additional time, and getting preliminary results may take several days.
