How did Maria get into Massage?

While living in Guatemala, Yolima discovered a lump in her breast.  The potential life altering experience laid the groundwork for her evolving appreciation of our health care, planting a seed that would grow in significance over time.

A broken ankle was the unexpected catalyst that led Yolima down the path to becoming a massage therapist. The relentless pain she endured in the months that followed, coupled with fruitless visits to healthcare professionals, served only to bend her mind and soul. She became a different person, angry and very depressed.  “No one wakes up knowing their life is about to change that day. Receiving a massage altered the direction of my life. For the first time in months, I was able to walk to the bathroom. It seems small now, but then — it might as well have been Mount Everest”.

Yolima’s own painful experiences has altered her approach to massage therapy, her clients, their bodies and how they relate to them. As she works with clients, especially those battling serious illnesses, she draws from her personal ordeals to meet them where they are without exacerbating pain through touch. Her grasp on their worry of potential harm from unskilled hands cultivates a profound respect for the trust her clients place in her abilities. Her primary goal is rooted in a desire to alleviate others’ pain and discomfort, inspired by the relief she found through healing touch.
