U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York will join Charlotte Councilwoman Dimple Ajmera and local parents in Charlotte on Tuesday to highlight the Harris-Walz plan to cut taxes for working families.
The speakers will discuss Vice President Kamala Harris’ framework for more than 100 million Americans to get tax relief, according to the campaign.
Part of this plan includes restoring the American Rescue Plan’s expanded Child Tax Credit, which would provide up to $3,600 per child tax credit for middle class families. The initial policy was implemented in 2021 and expired at the end of that year.
In addition to reinstating the policy, a Harris administration would also seek to expand the Child Tax Credit so that families with newborn children receive a $6,000 tax cut, according to the campaign.
Harris is committed to ensuring that people earning less than $400,000 a year will not pay more in new taxes, according to the campaign.
In an invite-only visit to Raleigh earlier this month, Harris outlined her economic agenda: building an “opportunity economy” prioritizing the working class.
The agenda aims to relieve economic stresses such as housing costs for first-time homebuyers, food prices, and high rents.
Gillibrand has been a staunch advocate on Capitol Hill for restoring the Child Tax Credit through avenues like the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act, a bill that’s made its way through the House and now lies in the upper chamber.
In 2016, Ajmera became the first Asian-American and the youngest woman elected to the Charlotte City Council. During her time in office, the Democrat has fought for affordable housing and healthcare.
Speakers will also address how former President Donald Trump’s Project 2025 would raise costs and increase taxes for working families while providing handouts to billionaires and large corporations.
