Palmer, a former president of the Alabama Policy Institute, a conservative think tank, is fully on the right wing of the Republican Party. He opposes abortion rights; has called for stronger border security and voted against a funding package earlier this year to keep the government running. He defeated two Republican challengers in the primary in March.
Anderson campaigned on protecting women’s reproductive rights, including access to abortion care and in vitro fertilization (IVF) services. She also said she would work to expand access to health care in the state and focus on alleviating poverty.
The district includes suburban Birmingham, including Shelby County, as well as Bibb, Chilton and Coosa counties and most of Blount County.
