Letters to the editor.

Dear Diggers,

I read with interest Sen. Wendy Harrison’s commentary regarding prosperity and affordability in Vermont. In particular, Sen. Harrison cited 2023 U.S. Census Bureau figures and stated that “people are moving to Vermont.” She went on to cite migration figures that suggest people are leaving New Hampshire to come to Vermont.

In fact, there are not enough people moving to our state or being born here to replace our deaths. Between 2023 and 2024, Vermont’s population dropped from 648,708 to 648,493. In that same period of time, the population of New Hampshire grew from 1,402,199 to 1,409,032.

The Tax Foundation, a research think tank, just released its own summary of interstate migration trends. Vermont had a net outflow to other states, and ranked 37th in the country for interstate migration, with a net outflow in 2024.

Whatever Sen. Harrison’s agenda might be, the facts do not support the suggestion that people are being drawn to Vermont from neighboring low-tax states.

Best Regards,
