Let’s put hard news in the backseat today to reflect on what makes Louisiana such a special place.
For the Illuminator, there’s so much to be thankful for this holiday – and every day.
1. The many advocates and activists who speak out on behalf of those who are marginalized in Louisiana, including many of you who are among those impacted. Also, we appreciate those in power who take the time to hear their concerns.
2. More days of early voting. Secretary of State Nancy Landry saw the need to add two more days to the Nov. 5 election cycle. We’re hopeful election officials statewide will continue to make voting more accessible to the public.
3. Good food in New Orleans and beyond. Even if palate-challenged Travis Kelce doesn’t partake, we know Louisiana takes the culinary championship no matter what corner of the state is serving up the goods. Here’s hoping there’s plenty on your table today.
4. Food banks. Efforts take place year-round to ensure food insecure families in Louisiana have access to adequate, nutritious meals. On a day when we gather to share a hearty meal with loved ones, it’s worth remembering those who aren’t as fortunate – and those who work and volunteer to see that they don’t go without.
5. First Amendment defenders. It’s one thing to talk about transparency; it’s another to actually take steps to defend the news media and protect the public’s right to know how their government is run and who’s behind the decisions involving their tax dollars.
6. Football. Yes, even in a year when our Tigers and Saints aren’t playing up to snuff, it’s still a worthwhile occasion to gather with family and friends for top-notch tailgating. By the way, be sure to watch Tulane University tonight against Memphis on ESPN. It’s been a fantastic year for the Green Wave.
7. Our natural abundance of wildlife. Whether you’re an angler or hunter — or even just a passive observer – you’re hard pressed to find any other place where you can enjoy the pursuit of your favorite catch or game than Louisiana. We’re also a bird watcher’s paradise, drawing people far and wide. Today, we raise a glass to those who work to ensure future generations will be able to enjoy these pastimes.
8. Live music venues. Whether your tastes lean toward Jimmie Davis or Lil Wayne, you have to appreciate the fertile ground Louisiana has provided to foster recording artists since the medium’s inception. True audiophiles will know the legacy behind the landmarks such as Buck and Johnny’s, Ruby’s Roadhouse, Enoch’s Irish Pub and Tipitina’s. The list goes on – and so does homegrown Louisiana music.
9. The many news organizations who republish and cite our reporting. You’re helping fulfill our mission to bring news to underserved communities. A growing number of newspapers, websites, radio and television stations see the importance of sharing our coverage with their audiences.
10. Our readers and supporters. In just four years, you’ve helped establish the Illuminator as a trusted source of journalism in Louisiana. Your support means everything to us, whether it’s a financial donation or simply through word of mouth.
Join us today in a toast to what makes us great in the Bayou State.
