Three congressional races in Oregon could determine which party controls the next U.S. House. (Ron Cooper/Oregon Capital Chronicle)
The first unofficial election results in Oregon will be published Tuesday just after 8 p.m. by the Secretary of State’s Office and most county elections offices, with updates later in the night and following days.
Most ballots received at county offices by Tuesday night will be processed that night or Wednesday. But tallies will change as election officials process mailed and postmarked ballots along with ballots deposited in drop boxes. Results can be delayed when voters forget to sign their ballot envelopes or their signatures don’t match the signature on file, requiring officials to check them. Officials have up to 21 days after the election to fix issues so votes are counted.
The counting will continue for days, and mail-in ballots received by Nov. 12 will be counted. In tight races, the results might not be known for awhile.
The final election results will be certified on Dec. 2.
The Secretary of State’s Office will post results starting just after 8 p.m., with updates as new batches of votes come in. Most counties also will post results on their webpages. The results for Multnomah County’s new city government using ranked choice voting will only appear on Multnomah County’s website.
