The first special election of 2025 is set.
Lt. Gov. Austin Davis announced Tuesday that a special election to replace state Sen. Ryan Aument in the 36th District will be held March 25.
Aument resigned the seat in December for a new job as the state director for the office of U.S. Sen Dave McCormick (R-Pa.).
“I wish Senator Aument all the best in his new role serving the people of Pennsylvania as Senator McCormick’s state director,” Davis said. “It’s been great working with him in the Senate, and I hope we can continue to collaborate on state and federal issues.”
The race to succeed Aument is well underway. Lancaster Online reports that state Rep. Brett Miller, Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons, teacher Steven Heffner, and retired truck driver Brad Witmer are all vying for the Republican Party nomination for the seat, while Matthew Good, a former school librarian, is so far the only candidate seeking the Democratic Party nod.
Aument most recently won reelection in 2022 in the Republican-friendly district by defeating Mike Miller in the GOP primary by 20 points. He was unopposed in the general election.
The winner will serve for the remainder of Aument’s term, which ends in 2026.
Even with the vacancy, Republicans still hold a slim majority in the state Senate.
