Roger Williams University President Ioannis “Yannis” Miaoulis is taking a temporary leave of absence following a recent illness, the university confirmed Friday morning.

During his absence, Heather Boujoulian, chair of the university’s Board of Trustees, will serve as acting president to oversee the university’s operations.

“Our well wishes are with Yannis, and we are wishing him a speedy recovery,” Boujoulian said in a statement distributed to faculty, students, staff and the news media. “The university is fortunate to have a strong leadership team in place, and I have every confidence that together we can ensure smooth operations during Yannis’s temporary absence.”

Miaoulis was named the 11th president of Roger Williams University in August 2019. He previously served as president and director of the Boston Museum of Science.
