Vermont State Police said they have arrested the 23-year-old son of a Pawlet Selectboard member, who with his wife and her 13-year-old son was found fatally shot in their Pawlet home early Sunday morning.
Brian Crossman Jr., 23, of Granville, New York, faces three counts of aggravated murder in the shooting deaths, state police said in a press release Friday afternoon.
New York State Police took the younger Crossman into custody based on a Vermont arrest warrant, the Vermont agency said, although no timeline for the arrest was given.
The suspect was being held without bail and was scheduled to appear in a New York courtroom Friday afternoon for an extradition hearing.
“The Vermont State Police investigation identified significant evidence that linked Crossman Jr. to the killings, including digital information, statements, injuries, and various interviews,” police said in the press release.
The suspect’s father, 46-year-old Brian Crossman Sr.; his stepmother, 41-year-old Erica (Pawlusiak) Crossman; and his stepbrother, 13-year-old Colin Taft, were all found shot to death in the Route 133 farmhouse they shared.
Police reported they were first alerted to the home early Sunday following a report of a “suspicious” person in neighboring Wells. Investigators have since described that person as “bloody,” but did not indicate if that person was a suspect in the case, nor did they indicate if that person was related to the victims.
In an update Tuesday, police said they had no one in custody and urged the public to report any related information to police while the investigation continued.
In announcing the arrest, state police thanked residents of the small Rutland County community “for their continued patience and understanding as this case unfolded throughout the week.”
