Montpelier’s youth have always had a voice, but that voice is about to become louder and stronger.

I am pleased to announce the formation of the city of Montpelier Youth Committee. This is a new initiative designed to empower our young residents to participate in local governance and advocate for the issues they care about. This committee isn’t just a platform; it’s a movement that will shape the future of our city by putting its future leaders at the forefront.

Imagine a room filled with passionate young minds eager to contribute to the community they love. This is the essence of the Youth Committee: a space where Montpelier’s youth can influence policy, promote advocacy and make a difference. The young leaders will have a seat at the table and will use it to make their voices heard, on issues ranging from mental health awareness to voting at 16.

A young leader sits at the head of the committee and is tasked with guiding discussions, representing the committee at official functions and communicating directly with the City Council. There will be three dynamic subcommittees dedicated to policy, advocacy and engagement. A subcommittee is a hive of activity where ideas are transformed into actions: new policies are drafted, campaigns are organized and community events like the Montpelier youth leadership summit are held.

But this committee isn’t just about meetings and minutes — it’s about impact. The policy subcommittee, for example, will examine the issues affecting Montpelier’s youth, conducting surveys and workshops to understand their needs and drafting recommendations directly with city officials. In addition to championing mental health, education and climate action, the advocacy subcommittee will partner with local organizations to enhance their impact. And the engagement subcommittee? It will bring it all to life — planning volunteer days, town halls and leadership workshops to inspire and connect.

There is a place here for every young person who joins. Whether as a committee member participating in meetings, a subcommittee member contributing their expertise or simply someone passionate about making a difference, each voice matters. The committee will meet monthly, mostly online, to ensure that all can attend, no matter their schedule or location.

I will serve as the committee’s dedicated liaison, and these young leaders will receive comprehensive training in leadership, public speaking and policy analysis. They’ll prepare an annual report outlining their accomplishments, challenges and future goals, which will be presented to the city council and the public — proof of their hard work and dedication.

This is not just an opportunity; it’s a call to action. Montpelier is inviting the city’s youth to step up, speak out and shape the future of our city. The Youth Committee is ready to make history — one voice, one policy, one change at a time.

Let’s empower the next generation to lead.

Youth in grades 6-12 are encouraged to apply on the city’s website. To request a paper copy of the application, you can contact the city manager’s office at 802-223-9502.
