Would Gov. Ron DeSantis consider appointing himself to the Senate to replace Marco Rubio? Absolutely not, the governor said during a press conference in Jacksonville Friday morning.
DeSantis joked about reporting on who he could pick to succeed Rubio, who President-elect Donald Trump picked as secretary of state.
“I was never in consideration for that,” DeSantis said during a press conference renewing his commitment to school choice. “Trust me, we’re doing well here, and we’re going to continue to do that. And so it was never something that I considered.”
Although he doesn’t anticipate Rubio will officially leave his post in the Senate before Jan. 20, DeSantis said he is still on course to announce his pick next week. He previously promised to choose someone by the first half of January.
Following the Tampa investiture ceremony for Hillsborough County State Attorney Suzy Lopez earlier this week, DeSantis brushed aside a question about Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody being up for the job. And on Friday, he again took a jab at speculations over who he’ll give the post.
“It’s all made up, and they’re just guessing. And look, it isn’t that hard to guess. Like, you know, of 10 plausible people? Like, there’s some pretty obvious people who would be in that mix, right?
