Tuesday is the deadline for New Jerseyans to register to vote in time to cast ballots in this year’s presidential race.

Residents who are United States citizens can register to vote if they are not incarcerated and have lived in their county for at least 30 days before Election Day. You must be at least 17 years old to register, though you must reach 18 before you can vote on Nov. 5.

Registration applications can be returned in person to a county’s superintendent of elections or commissioner of registration, depending on the county. Those offices, as well as local clerks and some state agencies, can provide voter registration forms that are also available online.

In-person registration applications will be accepted until an office closes, and some counties are running extended hours Tuesday to allow voters more time to register. Some offices in Burlington County, for example, will remain open until 8 p.m. or 9 p.m., depending on location.

Registration applications can also be returned by mail and will be accepted so long as they are postmarked no later than Oct. 15.

Prospective voters can also register online.

New Jersey requires voters to be registered 21 days before an election to vote in that race.
