Former Sen. Joe Manchin, I-W.Va., is joining the board of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, the organization announced Wednesday.
The Committee, formed in 1981, is a non-partisan, Washington, D.C.-based organization that aims to educate the public on issues with significant fiscal policy impact, according to its website.
Former Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, has also joined the organization’s board.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be joined by Sens. Mitt Romney and Joe Manchin in our effort to improve the nation’s finances,” Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget said in a statement. “Both of these men distinguished themselves during their time in the Senate as leaders who were willing to prioritize fiscal responsibility and confront the trade-offs needed to improve our out-of-control national debt.
“Sen. Manchin’s service to West Virginia, from secretary of state to governor to his many years as senator, show he has been a strong advocate for restoring fiscal sanity to Washington and demonstrate a continued willingness to work in a bipartisan fashion to address our nation’s fiscal challenges,” she said.
Manchin, a former governor and secretary of state, served in the U.S. Senate for 14 years, ending in January. Manchin served most of his political career as a Democrat before switching his affiliation to independent last year, sparking rumors he might run for another office in last year’s election.
His former seat is now held by former Republican West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice.
