LEXINGTON — Kentucky Lantern reporters won two awards announced during the Kentucky Press Association Winter Convention banquet in Lexington Friday.

Liam Niemeyer placed second in the “general news” awards category.

Sarah Ladd tied for second place in the “best feature story” category, sharing the award with Krista Johnson of The Courier Journal.

John Cheves from the Lexington Herald-Leader and Josh Wood from The Courier Journal won 2024 Jon Fleischaker Freedom of Information Awards — Cheves for his extensive coverage of the state’s juvenile justice system and Wood for his coverage of the Louisville Metro Police Department. The Fleischaker award, named in honor of First Amendment attorney Jon Fleischaker of Louisville, recognizes journalism that through the use of public records holds government accountable.

Also receiving Fleischaker awards were the Richmond Register and the College Heights Herald, Western Kentucky University’s student newspaper.

The 2024 KPA journalists of the year were Ryan Richardson of The Owensboro Times, Trevor Sherman of the Corbin News Journal and Kristopher Fister of the Murray State News.

Dennis Brown, the incoming KPA president and publisher of The Lewis County Herald, won the Lewis Owens Community Service Award, presented  by the Lexington Herald-Leader in honor of its late publisher Lewis Owens.
