Starting today, the Idaho State Tax Commission and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service will start processing individual tax returns for 2024.
That’s also when the IRS’s Direct File program starts up, which lets residents in 25 states — now including Idahoans — can file their taxes for free directly through the IRS.
The Idaho State Tax Commission estimates in a news release that around 210,000 Idahoans will be eligible to use the free, electronic tax filing service.
Once your federal tax return is done, the website will direct users to Idaho’s state tax filing tool — and automatically share much of your tax info into Idaho’s tool for ease-of-use, the Idaho State Tax Commission says.
How to check eligibility for IRS Direct File, or Free File
Visit the IRS’s Direct File website to see if you’re eligible for the free tax filing program.
You can also visit the Idaho State Tax Commission’s website to see if you qualify for another free tax filing program, called Free File. Most people who have an adjusted gross income at or below $84,000 qualify for Free File, the tax commission says.
