LOUISVILLE — Following a “hazardous materials incident” on Payne Street in Louisville on Tuesday, emergency crews called on people within a one-mile radius to shelter-in place for  about an hour.

As of 4:39 p.m., there was still an evacuation order in place for a two-block radius surrounding the 1800 block of Payne Street.

TV station WLKY reported that at least 11 people were injured in the “explosion.”

The UofL Hospital emergency department received at least seven of those injured, according to spokeswoman Heather Fountaine, and “is prepared for any more that may come this way.”

“We have activated the decontamination unit/procedures. (The) Louisville Fire Department is also at the hospital assisting with decontamination,” Fountaine said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also investigating, according to a post on X, formerly Twitter
