An incident at the Lewis and Clark County Courthouse on Friday afternoon put the building on lockdown.

At around 1:30 p.m. shots were fired at the courthouse, according to an Independent Record story. The paper reported a woman was in custody.

The public was urged to stay away from the area.

“Law enforcement have responded to an incident at the Courthouse on Broadway Street,” The City of Helena posted on its Twitter account on Friday afternoon. “There is longer an active threat to public safety, but residents are asked to avoid the area as there will be law enforcement activity for the foreseeable future.”

Helena police and fire were at the scene.
