Crisanta Duran, former speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives, announced Thursday that she is running in 2026 for Colorado attorney general.
Duran represented northwest Denver’s House District 5 from 2011 to 2019 and served as speaker between 2017 and 2019. Before she was speaker, she chaired the powerful Joint Budget Committee.

“Like many Coloradans, I’m deeply concerned about the future of our country and know that a new path forward is required in times like these when it can seem as though nothing is sacred,” Duran said in a statement. “With all of the hate that is coming out of Washington, D.C., I will do everything in my power to ensure that Coloradans are not in harm’s way and have the opportunity to reach their greatest potential. I will strive for fairer and more just outcomes.”
Duran is the second Democrat to announce a run for attorney general, following Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty’s announcement of his campaign earlier this week.
The attorney general heads the Colorado Department of Law and oversees enforcement of consumer protection and antitrust laws, defends state laws in legal challenges, and advocates for law enforcement and community safety.
Attorney General Phil Weiser, a Democrat is finishing his second term, announced his run for governor in January.
Duran is an associate at The Harris Law Firm in Denver.
In her campaign announcement, Duran touted legislation she sponsored that made “child care and housing more affordable, schools safer, protected civil rights, expanded the deployment of broadband in rural areas, lifted up local businesses to train Coloradans for good paying jobs, and supported efforts to fund transit.”
Primary elections to decide party nominees for state offices will be held in June 2026.
