Connecticut’s child care conundrum is being felt in every corner of our state. Given the multifaceted nature of this problem, it’s clear there is no single solution that can adequately address this issue. Accordingly, all stakeholders must engage in collaborative efforts focused on developing and implementing innovative solutions that can collectively address the many issues plaguing Connecticut’s child care system.

The lack of accessible and affordable child care presents a complex challenge that necessitates innovative approaches. The Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority’s (CHEFA’s) enterprise capital grant to All Our Kin is one such approach.

What distinguishes an enterprise capital grant from traditional grant funding? Unlike traditional grant-making, which often focuses on capital improvements or short-term program needs, enterprise capital grants offer longer-term, flexible capital to strengthen an organization’s overall capacity and sustainability.

All Our Kin is focused on addressing the root causes of the child care shortage, which is particularly acute in under-resourced communities often labeled child care deserts. By expanding training initiatives on a statewide basis and supporting providers seeking training and national accreditation, All Our Kin is equipping home-based providers, often small businesses run by women of color, with the tools and knowledge they need to deliver high-quality child care. By targeting underserved areas, All Our Kin aims to provide direct support to child care deserts and ensure that all communities have access to essential child care services.

CHEFA’s decision to award an enterprise capital grant to All Our Kin underscores its commitment to fostering innovative solutions on a statewide level that enhance the quality of life for all Connecticut residents. This first-of-its kind grant in Connecticut is not only providing financial support, but it also represents an investment in building a robust infrastructure to address Connecticut’s child care needs.

CHEFA’s enterprise capital grant to All Our Kin supports the continued pursuit of a more equitable and accessible child care landscape for all families in Connecticut.
