The Connecticut Mirror has been chosen along with four other news organizations to participate in ProPublica’s Local Reporting Network, the first group selected as part of ProPublica’s 50 State Initiative.
This is the second time the CT Mirror has been selected for the Local Reporting Network. The first time was in 2019, when CT Mirror produced in collaboration with ProPublica an award-winning series on housing segregation in Connecticut called Separated by Design, authored by Jacqueline Rabe Thomas.
“It is a testament to the strength of the Connecticut Mirror newsroom and the quality of work we produce that ProPublica selected us for a second time to work with them,” said Executive Editor Elizabeth Hamilton. “We are excited about this opportunity and grateful to ProPublica for continuing and expanding its efforts to strengthen local journalism.”
In this round of projects, CT Mirror investigative reporter Dave Altimari will participate, along with reporters from the Bangor (Maine) Daily News, New York Focus, the North Dakota Monitor and KYUK, a public radio station in Alaska. The projects will begin on July 1.
Altimari, who joined CT Mirror in 2021, recently was part of a team that won the first-ever National Press Foundation AARP Award for Excellence in Journalism on Aging for the four-part series “Connecticut’s Elder Care Reckoning.” He focuses on government accountability, including financial oversight, abuse of power and corruption.
“It is exciting to work with journalists from our first five states and to think about reaching so many more,” ProPublica Assistant Managing Editor Sarah Blustain said. “The 50 State Initiative has become an incredible opportunity for us to develop dialogue with reporters and editors throughout the country.”
