The Brattleboro Retreat’s board of trustees has appointed Steve Cummings as chief executive officer, the organization announced Wednesday.

Cummings has been serving in that role in an interim capacity since April. He came to the organization in July 2023 as the nonprofit’s chief information officer under former CEO Linda Rossi.

The Retreat is the state’s largest provider of inpatient, outpatient and residential mental health treatment.

Cummings has over 40 years of experience in health care, according to a press release issued by the Retreat. He worked as a registered nurse before earning an MBA and moving into hospital administration and consulting, according to the Retreat.

His top initiatives at the organization are implementing a new electronic health record system, Meditech, and expanding the Retreat’s capacity to provide residential treatment for youth ages 12 to 18, the organization said in the press release.

In a written statement, board chair Thomas Huebner said, “We are fortunate to have a leader who truly understands the complexities of mental health care and is dedicated to continuing the Retreat’s long legacy of providing exceptional care to our patients.”
