A rally is scheduled Saturday to protest the Detroit Police Department’s budget and “invest in permanent non-punitive resources and social programs for Detroiters,” organizers say.
The event, which is set to take place at noon at the Detroit Police Union Building, 1938 E. Jefferson St. in Detroit, is organized by Black Lives Matter Detroit in partnership with General Strike U.S. Detroit/Downriver and The Michigan Coalition for Human Rights.
“It is imperative that the Detroit City Government divest from punitive policing and invest permanent funding into resources and services that protect the community and prevent harm,” organizers said in a press release.
In summer 2020, there were a series of Black Lives Matter rallies in Detroit and across the country to protest police brutality following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
