The U.S. Department of Labor is encouraging Louisiana residents to use its online tool to claim back wages they might be owed.

The agency’s New Orleans District office alone has recovered $3 million owed to 4,600 workers, across Louisiana, according to a press release Tuesday.

A person can search for their lost pay by using their name or their employer’s name in the “Workers Owed Wages” online tool.

If you are owed money, you can submit contact information electronically through the portal and then fill out a form sent to you via standard mail to claim your compensation.

You will have to eventually provide proof of your identity via a Social Security card, individual taxpayer identification number, driver’s license, W-2 form or pay stub, according to the labor department’s website.

Once you complete the claims process, it will take the federal government approximately six weeks to send you a check with your money.

The wage recovery online tool is available in English and Spanish.
