Florida Republican Congressman Cory Mills (from U.S. House)
Days after it was reported that Washington, D.C., police were investigating assault allegations against east central Florida Republican Congressman Cory Mills, the Florida Democratic Party (FDP) is questioning why the interim U.S. attorney in Washington has yet to sign an arrest warrant sent to him regarding the incident.
Mills, 44, has denied the allegations and is not facing charges in the incident. He told Politico on Monday night that both he and the alleged victim have denied that any such incident occurred. That alleged victim is a 27-year-old woman who is not Mills’ wife.
According to a copy of the public incident report forwarded to the Phoenix by the Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to an apartment complex at 1:15 p.m last Wednesday after they were called to the area for a reported assault.
The report describes the investigation as “simple assault” by use of hands or feet.
Police had requested an arrest warrant for Mills to be signed by Edward Martin Jr., the interim top prosecutor for the District of Columbia as part of their investigation into the incident that was reported at a D.C. apartment last Wednesday. But Martin’s office sent the warrant back, unsigned, and said the case needed further investigation, according to NBC 4 in Washington.
FDP Chair Nikki Fried is making an issue out of the case, questioning Martin’s independence after he described the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington as made up of “President Trump’s lawyers” on Monday.
“Not even 100 days into the Trump administration and they’re already running cover-ups for Republicans,” Fried said in a written statement on Tuesday.
“It’s obscene but not surprising to think that Cory Mills may get away with domestic assault because he’s one of the president’s loyal soldiers. After all, Donald Trump himself was once found liable for sexual abuse. If the D.C. police thought the case warranted his arrest, it’s reasonable to ask why ‘Trump’s lawyers’ decided to ignore it. I also think it’s reasonable to ask what Cory Mills was doing in a luxury D.C. high rise with a woman who isn’t his wife.”
Mills,44, is an Army combat veteran first elected in 2022 to represent Florida’s 7th Congressional District, which encompasses Seminole and parts of Volusia County. He was re-elected in 2024.
“The people of Florida deserve answers to these questions and more, especially from the so-called party of ‘law and order’ and ‘family values,’” Fried added in her statement.
“The Florida Democratic Party is calling for a continued investigation into both Mills’s actions and the inaction of the interim U.S. Attorney. We’re also calling on the Florida GOP to join us in this call for a full investigation and to immediately denounce domestic violence.”
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said Friday that an internal investigation into the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s response and handling of the case is also taking place.
