Mississippi Today is proud to announce the launch of a new section called Mississippi Today Ideas.
Mississippi Today Ideas will serve as a platform for thoughtful Mississippians to share fact-based ideas about our state’s past, present and future. Rather than following a traditional newspaper opinion section format, the section will strive to focus on creative, constructive solutions that address Mississippi’s unique challenges and inspire progress.
MT Ideas will not be a platform for partisan endorsements or overt political debate. Instead, we’ll showcase diverse perspectives from Mississippians working on the ground to improve and highlight our communities.
Led by veteran journalist and respected columnist Bobby Harrison, the section will feature voices that bring fresh insight and expertise, highlighting everything from health care and education to arts and economic development.
“Mississippi Today Ideas will strive to attract essayists who can highlight the many positive aspects of our state while, importantly, confronting our problems head-on and offering solutions to make us better,” Harrison said. “I believe that is at the heart of what we want to do at Mississippi Today, and I’m honored to serve in this new role.”
We’re launching with a series of topics in coming weeks, including perspectives from former governors, mayors from across Mississippi, well-known celebrities and concerned citizens with solutions to the state’s “brain drain” problem. The section’s first piece, written by Myrlie Evers, published today. A second piece from former Gov. Haley Barbour will publish later this week.
As we grow MT Ideas in the days and weeks ahead, we’ll open up submissions so any Mississippian with valuable ideas has a chance to contribute. Each piece will be thoughtfully vetted and edited, and we’ll maintain a high standard to ensure the section becomes a trusted space for sophisticated, forward-thinking dialogue.
In the meantime, if you have questions, concerns or ideas for submission, please contact Bobby Harrison at bharrison@mississippitoday.org.
With a mix of written articles, multimedia content like video and podcasts, and eventually live events, MT Ideas will provide a steady stream of stories that informs, connects and inspires. By creating a space for Mississippi’s best thinkers and doers, we hope to bring Mississippians together in ways that could help shape the future of our state for the better.
