A big year for Michigan

All year Michigan Advance journalists have been telling stories from around Michigan, documenting events in history big and small. Reporters captured moments throughout 2024 from Detroit breaking the record for the most attended NFL Draft to presidential candidates courting Michigan as a key battleground state.

While Michigan held the nation’s attention during the election, the Advance continued connecting what goes on in the halls of federal and state government to the lives of Michiganders.

We here at Michigan Advance thank readers for their interest and their time. You made the stories and the stories were written for you.

Snapshots from Michigan

Whether on the center stage or in the neighborhood, Michiganders were making headlines in 2024. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer set her sights on new policies under a first in decades Democrat-majority legislature, Michiganders made their voices heard on issues that mattered to them and Detroit’s Michigan Central Station reopened after being abandoned for decades, undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation by Ford Motor Co.

Michigan Advance captured moments of healing, joy, debate and change.

An election for the history books

As the 2024 presidential election raged on, the eyes of voters were affixed to Michigan to anticipate which way the battleground state would swing.

And candidates recognized Michigan’s role as a key segment of the road to the White House, with President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris visiting frequently throughout the election cycle.

Life in Michigan

Amidst an election many say marked a pivotal moment in the nation’s future, life in Michigan persisted. The state reflected on its past, celebrated its different communities and grappled with the events that have left their mark.
