As New Mexicans head to the polls to cast their ballots on Election Day, over half of the state’s legislative races are already decided. Many candidates ran uncontested following the June primaries.

Twenty-seven senate races and 38 house races had only one candidate running this general election. Most seats were claimed by incumbents, however eight senate seats and five house seats will feature new faces to the state legislature.

Three state senate races also include three representatives moving to state senate seats — Candy Spence Ezzell (R-Roswell) for Senate District 32, James Townsend (R-Artesia) for Senate District 34 and Larry Scott (R-Hobbs) for Senate District 42.

With about 58% of the legislative races including only one person on the ballot, a large portion of New Mexico voters had no choice to make
