A Manchester physician has been sanctioned by the state, which alleged he had a sexual relationship with a patient.

The Board of Medicine recently charged Dr. Nikolas May, who specializes in family medicine, with unprofessional conduct in the form of sexual misconduct, and with failure to inform the board of a hospital’s disciplinary action against him.

The board alleged that at some unspecified point in time, it received information that May was engaged in a sexual relationship an individual who was also his patient at the time. The board alleges the individual, in addition to being a patient, was “also an employee” – although the board doesn’t state whether the person was employed by May or was a co-worker at a hospital or clinic.

The board also alleges May failed to inform the board of a 30-day suspension from the hospital where he worked. The alleged suspension was tied to the relationship, although the board has not publicly identified the hospital in question.

May and the board agreed to resolve the case with a settlement that calls for May to receive a warning and pay a $3,000 civil penalty. May is also required to complete a board-approved course on maintaining professional boundaries in his practice.

May has been an Iowa-licensed physician since August 2014.
