“A Witch’s Home,” by Ace Lafountain, 16, of Montpelier.

Young Writers Project is a creative online community of teen writers, photographers and artists, which has been based in Vermont since 2006. Each week, VTDigger features the writing and art of young Vermonters who publish their work on youngwritersproject.org, a free, interactive website for 12- to 18-year-olds. To find out more, visit youngwritersproject.org, or contact Executive Director Susan Reid at sreid@youngwritersproject.org and 802-324-9538.

What screams Vermont to you? Is it the sugar shacks, the famed sea monster, the magnificent ski slopes? For this week’s featured writer, Abigail Balon of Panton, it’s our bucolic fields, our jagged mountaintops, our picturesque sunsets. “Beauty. Peace. Vermont,” one might say; we couldn’t agree more.

Vermont

Abigail Balon, 13, Panton

I stare at the rolling fields, watching the houses slip by. I look up at the mountains, noticing the warm tint on the trees that blanket them. It’s past 7 p.m., one of the most beautiful times of day in Vermont. I’m in the car, staring out at this beauty. It sinks in how glad I am to have moved here. It feels like every day I’m on vacation. I look out into the pretty sky, the grand mountains, the vast valleys. Beauty. Peace. Vermont.
