Pres. Joe Biden canceled a speech Wednesday afternoon in Las Vegas after testing positive for COVID-19.
“I was just on the phone with President Biden and he shared his deep disappointment at not being able to join us this afternoon,” Janet Murguia, CEO of UnidosUS, told the audience attending the organization’s conference at the MGM Grand. “The President has been at many events, as we all know, and he just tested positive for COVID.”
Shortly after, the White House issued a statement saying Biden “is vaccinated and boosted and he is experiencing mild symptoms. He will be returning to Delaware where he will self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time. The White House will provide regular updates on the President’s status as he continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation.
Biden was scheduled to speak about his immigration protections for undocumented spouses. Tuesday Biden’s Las Vegas appearances included an address to the NAACP National Convention.
“He said to tell my folks that we’re not going to get rid of him that quickly,” and promised to address the group in the future, Murguia said.
The president, who is being pressured to drop out of the 2024 presidential race following a disastrous debate performance last month against former Pres. Donald Trump, faced renewed calls to get out of the race Wednesday, including from Rep. Adam Schiff (D) of California.
