The Alabama Legislature’s Contract Review Committee Thursday approved a $3 million State Department of Education contract for a mobile career exploration workshop and tour.

Jason Swann, general counsel for the Alabama State Department of Education, said they are paying department employees to go with the trailer made by Be Pro Be Proud, Inc., the company running the program.

According to the company’s website, Be Pro Be Proud, Inc. currently operates in six states, including neighboring states Georgia and Tennessee.

Swann said the project also included the Alabama Workforce Council.

“There’s a lot of rural areas that don’t have access to the career tech centers and have availability to some of these career tech programs that are pretty costly  when it comes to machinery,” he said.

Swann did not detail which counties would be visited or how often.

Rep. Chris Pringle, R-Mobile, asked for the schematic for the trailer, which Swann he would send to the entire committee.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Pringle said that it sounded like Science on Wheels, a program that brought items like microscopes to rural counties.

“It was just the price tag caught my eye,” he said.
