The Democratic candidate for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District called for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the U.S. presidential race on Thursday.

Michael Moore, who won the Democratic primary last month and will challenge U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., in November, posted his call for Biden to step down on X, formerly known as Twitter. Moore said the president should help in transitioning to a new nominee.

“President Biden’s impact as a public servant cannot be overstated,” Moore wrote. “He has been a champion of American ideals and a key leader in the Democratic Party for more than four decades. I believe he now has a critical role to play in the preservation of our democracy and institutions.”

Today, I’m calling on President Biden to withdraw from the 2024 White House race — and to help guide Democrats’ transition to a new nominee ahead of the November election.

Moore did not say in the series of posts why he is calling on Biden to step aside, instead stressing the importance of the November election and saying the party should build on Biden’s success four years ago in defeating former President Donald Trump.

Democrats have privately and sometimes publicly expressed doubt about Biden’s candidacy after his poor performance in the first presidential debate last week.

On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas became the first sitting Democrat in Congress to call for Biden to step aside. On Wednesday U.S. Rep. Raúl Gijalva, a Democrat from Arizona, joined the call.

U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, South Carolina’s only current Democratic member of Congress and a co-chair of the Biden-Harris Campaign told MSNBC on Tuesday that he still backs Biden at the top of the ticket. Clyburn did say, if Biden steps aside, he would support Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee.
